The Hidden Costs of IoT Testing: What Our Latest Survey Reveals About Industry Pain Points

Recently, we conducted a webinar titled "Field Failures are Costly: How to Avoid Them with Virtual Testing," where we polled industry professionals about their testing challenges. The results were both telling and concerning—revealing systemic issues that are costing the industry billions in field failures and delayed launches.

The Quality Crisis: Where IoT Teams Are Struggling Most

Our first poll question asked participants to identify areas where they have the most quality concerns in their systems. The responses paint a picture of an industry grappling with comprehensive testing challenges:

  • 30% cited "All of the above" - indicating that quality concerns span multiple areas simultaneously
  • 20% struggled with End-to-end System Testing - the complex orchestration of IoT ecosystems
  • 15% each faced issues with Functional Issues in Cloud Apps and Load & Performance in Cloud environments
  • 10% each dealt with Functional Issues in Edge Software and Network Conditions

What's particularly striking is that nearly one-third of respondents stated multiple areas of quality concern instead of pinpointing a single area. Another fifth highlighted end-to-end system testing.

This suggests that IoT systems have become so interconnected that failures cascade across multiple components, making traditional siloed testing approaches inadequate.

The Testing Bottleneck: Complex Scenarios and Infrastructure Challenges

When we asked about the biggest challenges during IoT software testing, the responses revealed even deeper systemic issues:

  • 31% identified "Support complex scenarios - FOTA, network variability" as their primary challenge
  • 27% struggled with "Managing in-house simulators"
  • 15% each faced "Inconsistent coverage" and "Inadequate load testing"
  • 8% dealt with "Protocol compliance" issues

The fact that nearly one-third of professionals struggle with complex scenario testing—particularly Firmware Over-The-Air (FOTA) updates and network variability—highlights a critical gap in current testing methodologies. These scenarios are exactly what cause the most expensive field failures, yet they're the hardest to replicate in traditional lab environments. Around a quarter of the responds said that they struggle with managing in-house simulators. When the IoT solutions increase in complexity, custom built simulators are do not match up.

The Real Cost of Inadequate Testing

These survey results align perfectly with what we see in the market: organizations spending 60-80% of their development cycles on testing, yet still experiencing costly field failures. The challenge isn't a lack of effort—it's a fundamental limitation of current testing approaches.

Traditional hardware-based testing labs cannot economically replicate the infinite permutations of real-world conditions that IoT devices encounter. When 27% of teams struggle just to manage their in-house simulators, it's clear that the infrastructure burden alone is preventing thorough testing.

Virtual Testing: The Path Forward

The convergence of these challenges points to a clear solution: virtual testing environments that can simulate the complexity of real-world IoT deployments without the infrastructure overhead.

Virtual testing addresses each of the top concerns our survey revealed:

  • For Complex Scenario Testing: Virtual environments can simulate thousands of network conditions, device states, and failure scenarios simultaneously, including the complex FOTA update processes that 31% of teams struggle with.
  • For Infrastructure Management: Cloud-based virtual testing eliminates the need to maintain expensive in-house simulators, addressing the 27% who struggle with simulator management.
  • For Consistent Coverage: Automated virtual testing ensures comprehensive coverage across all system components, solving the inconsistency issues faced by 15% of respondents.
  • For Load and Performance Testing: Virtual environments can simulate massive scale without the hardware costs, addressing the performance testing gaps identified by 15% of teams.

The Time for Change is Now

The survey data from our webinar participants represents a microcosm of the broader IoT industry. When 30% of professionals have quality concerns across multiple areas simultaneously, and 31% can't adequately test complex real-world scenarios, we're looking at an industry ripe for transformation.

Field failures in IoT aren't just expensive—they're often catastrophic to brand reputation and customer trust. The automotive industry learned this lesson with costly recalls; the IoT industry has the opportunity to learn from those mistakes.

Virtual testing isn't just an optimization—it's becoming a necessity for any organization serious about delivering reliable IoT products. The question isn't whether to adopt virtual testing, but how quickly you can implement it before your next costly field failure.

The path forward is clear: embrace virtual testing to validate your IoT products in simulated real-world conditions, reduce time-to-market, and eliminate the field failures that our survey shows are endemic across the industry.
